A myriad of diamonds could be formed on the giant ice planets (Uranus and Neptune), indicated a study published on Friday in the American journal "Science Advances".
The transformations of hydrogen and carbon would be at the origin of the formation of diamond in the liquid state, forming flows which would reach thousands of kilometers under the surface of the two planets to the rocky heart, specified the authors of this study, suggesting that oxygen added to the mixture would facilitate the reaction.
The recreation of these same conditions was the subject of an attempt led by a team of scientists from the HZDR (research laboratory based in Dresden in Germany), the German University of Rostock as well as the École polytechnique.
To do this, she used a simple plastic as a material mixing the necessary ingredients, namely carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, before then subjecting it to the fire of a powerful laser from the SLAC laboratory at Stanford, in the United States. United.
The results of the experiment allowed to observe nano-diamonds and to suppose that the formation of diamonds would be easier in the giant planets due to the strong presence of oxygen, noting that the diamonds being there could measure up to millions of carats.
This new way of producing nano-diamonds could be used in non-invasive surgery or quantum electronics, according to the same source.
