Colombia applies third dose against COVID to people over 18

BUCARAMANGA – Colombia began immunization against COVID-19 on Wednesday with a booster dose for people over 18 years of age in order to reduce the impact of a fourth peak of infections and deaths predicted by health authorities for December for the Christmas holidays.

The booster dose can be given six months after receiving the only Johnson & Johnson dose or the second dose in the case of the Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.

The Ministry of Health detailed on Wednesday in a statement that the application of the booster dose will coincide with the vaccination stages planned in Colombia. The initials correspond to the prioritized groups such as health personnel, especially those most exposed to the virus, who perform autopsies or autopsies, as well as inhabitants at high risk of presenting a serious condition and of dying from COVID-19.

Colombia started the application of booster doses since August, initially approving it for immunosuppressed patients. Then he admitted the immunization of people over 50 years old.

The country enabled the third dose for its adult population when it has not yet vaccinated its entire population with at least one dose: only 62% have it and of that figure at least 44% have the complete vaccination scheme.

The Minister of Health, Fernando Ruiz, recommended to the population that the reinforcement of the vaccination be done in a heterologous way, that is, using a different vaccine than the one initially applied.

“This is how the Advisory Committee recommended it, so if the person applied one of Sinovac, the recommendation is AstraZeneca or Moderna; or if the person was vaccinated with Pfizer now it is with Moderna or AstraZeneca and so on sequentially, ”Ruiz said in the statement.

The minister indicated that there are five million young people to be immunized, despite the fact that in recent weeks the influx of people in immunization posts has increased as a result of the requirement of the vaccination card to enter shops and mass events.

Health authorities have confirmed five million cases of COVID-19 in Colombia and more than 128,000 deaths throughout the pandemic.
