Alejandro Chiappe Duarte, of Colombian nationality, pleaded guilty on Monday to three serious charges charged against him, on April 28, 2021, for illegally practicing medicine on the Caribbean island, violating various provisions of the Law of the Board of Puerto Rico Medical Licensing and Discipline.
The Department of Justice reported through a statement that Chiappe Duarte is exposed to a penalty of between 2 and 5 years in prison and a $ 5,000 fine.
The reading of the sentence was scheduled for October 28, 2021.
According to the evidence of the Public Ministry, represented by the prosecutor of the Economic Crimes Division of the Department of Justice, Obdulio Meléndez Torra, the current convict, who is not authorized to practice medicine on the island, traveled from Colombia to Puerto Rico during the months of March and April 2021 and settled in the Ponte Guapa beauty salon in Caguas, a municipality near the metropolitan area of the capital.
From that establishment he advertised himself as a plastic surgeon and performed multiple botulinum toxin (Botox) procedures for wrinkles and lip fillers on countless clients.
In addition, he examined the bust, abdomen and buttocks of several women, whom he offered to perform cosmetic surgeries in Colombia to correct or improve said parts of the body.
“In the Economic Crimes Division of the Department of Justice, we are very aware that the people who practice medicine on the island comply with all the requirements and mandates of the law. In this case, we were able to collect the evidence required to obtain the result that is available today. announces, “said the prosecutor Meléndez Torra, who was in charge of the investigation.
“The Department of Justice will make sure to ‘prosecute’ anyone who fails to comply with the law and the criteria required in Puerto Rico to practice medicine.
