On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health announced 28,380 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection. According to virologist Professor Włodzimierz Gut, the fourth wave will last until 85 percent of the population either has COVID-19 or is vaccinated.
The Ministry of Health announced 28,380 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection on Wednesday. The ministry also said that 460 people suffering from COVID-19 have died. This is the highest number of infections in the fourth wave of the pandemic in Poland.
– In Poland, the fourth wave will be creeping – said virologist professor Włodzimierz Gut on Wednesday. He warned it could take 85 percent of the population to be covid or vaccinated. – Then the infection period will be shortened and the wave will start to die out – he added.
Poland is “almost a leader in terms of the number of infections and deaths”
In the opinion of professor Włodzimierz Gut, such a number of infections as we have now may be the result of a shift – during the free November days, infected people delayed seeing a doctor.
– This is what the number of deaths shows us. Among the larger countries, we are already almost the leader when it comes to the number of infections and deaths – he said.
The expert noted that at the moment in Poland half of the population is vaccinated. “About two-thirds of unvaccinated people will be needed,” said the virologist. He noted that there is a huge difference between the transmission of COVID-19 among vaccinated and unvaccinated people. The former do not burden the health service and do not die so often.
Those who have had COVID-19 are also sick
Professor Gut said SARS-CoV-2 is infected by everyone – whether someone has already had COVID-19, whether they are vaccinated or not. – Infection means the entry of a virus into the body, and it causes it to multiply in cells. In contrast, a prepared organism’s response limits this process, reduces forwarding capacity, and causes infection to be milder, said the virologist. He added that the symptoms of infection are a matter of genetics and body preparation.
He explained that when infected, the virus causes the so-called a cytokine storm, i.e. an excessive reaction of the body to the pathogen, which may turn out to be even worse than the SARS-CoV-2 infection itself.
– Struggling with infection, the body produces very large amounts of cytokines, which can lead to serious consequences, for example to the so-called covid fog, or in more severe cases even to dementia, not to mention nerve inflammation, heart, intestinal or lung diseases – he pointed out Gut.
In the opinion of a virologist in Poland, “the fourth wave will be creeping”. – The masks, which were worn by 80 percent of citizens, are now worn by only 30 percent, which means that only here and there are people wearing them correctly, and in many places not wearing them at all, let alone wearing them on the chin. An additional factor contributing to the increase in infections is the increasing number of interpersonal contacts, which is favored by the holidays – enumerated professor Gut.
Gut said the death rate is quite complex. – There are several elements, such as age predispositions, but also our behavior. If someone does not believe that COVID-19 exists and reports to the hospital in a serious condition, saving him is bordering on a miracle. Some even go straight under a respirator. There, a third are sentenced to death, warned the virologist.
He emphasized that people who have the first symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection should self-isolate.
