With a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Mavericks, the Golden State Warriors started to relax and let the gap reach 29 points at the start of the final quarter of Game 4. But the reserves had other ideas. They went in and closed the gap to 8, with 3:23 on the clock to play. The holders then returned to the court. End of reaction. The Mavs held on to a 119-109 victory on Tuesday night and avoided the sweep.
Luka Doncic was the Mavericks’ top scorer with 30, as well as 14 rebounds and 9 assists. But unlike Game 3, the supporting characters appeared. Dorian Finney-Smith scored 23 points. Reggie Bullock, who had zeroed in the last duel, made 18. The team hit 20 of 43 shots from the perimeter and could have had a quiet victory if it wasn’t for the carelessness of the final stretch.

On the Warriors side, Stephen Curry scored 20 points, but in the 32 minutes he was on the court, the team lost by 23 points. Rookie Jonathan Kuminga scored 17, but in his 21 minutes, Golden State won by 9. Low on energy, the team was dominated in the second and third periods, and seemed already to have their eyes on Game 5, on Thursday, in San Francisco. It will be the second chance to return to the NBA Finals after three years.
Before the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr gave an emotional statement about the shooting attack that left 19 children and a teacher dead at a school in Texas a few miles from the game site (see video below). He cited other recent shootings to urge US senators to urgently vote on a bill to require background checks on gun sales.
