Canadians are being called to the polls on September 20 for an early federal election, Justin Trudeau having ruled that it was up to his fellow citizens to decide how the country was going to emerge from the pandemic and look to the future. But, at the end of a 36-day election campaign, the re-election of the Liberal Prime Minister is far from certain.
“Whether it is to continue our vaccination efforts or for the support offered to people until the end of this crisis, all Canadians must choose how we will end our fight against Covid-19, and how we will rebuild better”, Justin Trudeau said on August 15.
By cutting short his minority mandate, acquired in 2019, to launch early elections, Justin Trudeau aroused astonishment. “Why an election now, Mr. Trudeau? ” asked the newspaper network Saltwire, signaling that ‘‘the Prime Minister takes the bet to go to the polls in the summer, during the Covid, to obtain a majority government ”.
Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet spoke of a decision “irresponsible”, and New Democratic Party (NDP) Leader Jagmeet Singh in an election “self-centered”.
Mr. Trudeau had to defend himself during the first debate of the leaders of the federal political parties, on September 2. “Why did you trigger an election in the middle of the fourth wave with forest fires and the situation on the ground in Afghanistan?” launched Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole.
The question returned to haunt him during the second televised debate a week later. Meanwhile, polls that gave the Liberals a comfortable lead over their rivals in mid-August now place them neck and neck with the Conservatives. What happened ?
