Internal elections in the Platform. “They have their own laws”

– Elections in the Civic Platform are governed by their own rights, the members of the Platform choose people whom they personally trust – explained on Sunday the spokesman of the party, Jan Grabiec, himself elected head of the Mazovian Civic Platform.

The new chairman commented on the result on Twitter, writing: “Thank you and congratulations to all the winners. The defeated should not drop their hands. You are all one team, and the most important game is still ahead of us. If you believe in the win, the Poles will believe in you.”

Donald Tusk was the acting chairman of the PO from July. The current elections have been ordered, although the term of office of Tusk’s predecessor, Boris Budka, ends only in January 2022.

However, the PO authorities decided to hold the election of the chairman, because in October elections were held at all levels of power in the party. The party’s National Council made the decision to call the PO chairman election on 10 August. According to the resolution of this body, on October 23, the PO activists were to elect the heads of regional and poviat structures, as well as the chairman.

Trzaskowski abandoned his plans

Even in July, when Donald Tusk was taking power in the party, Rafał Trzaskowski, the President of Warsaw, did not rule out seeking leadership in the PO. Later, however, the politician admitted that he had abandoned these plans.

– I proposed elections at the time when Donald Tusk appeared. I believed that then it was worth talking about what to do with the Platform. The vast majority of my colleagues, however, wanted to focus primarily on party consolidation. There was no appetite for such a debate. Since there was no appetite for debate, let’s focus today on how to win the parliamentary elections. I will not run in the elections just to prove something to someone – said Trzaskowski.

Donald Tusk became the acting chairman of the PO on 3 July after Borys Budka resigned from leading the party. Tusk was first elected one of the vice-presidents, and after Ewa Kopacz resigned from the deputy head, he became – as the eldest of the deputy presidents – the acting chairman.
