Experts from Drug Safety in Southampton used reporting systems in the UK, the United States and the EU to estimate the frequency of myocarditis and pericarditis after mRNA-based vaccines, writes Capital.ro.
According to the researchers, the two conditions were more common among men, occurred more often after the second dose of vaccine and mainly affected younger people. Reporting rates have suggested that both conditions are very rare and that the typical clinical course is mild, with complete recovery in most cases.
Scientists say the rate of myocarditis and pericarditis will increase as vaccination around the world progresses.
Myocarditis and pericarditis have been recognized as rare side effects after vaccination with Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna sera. They were first identified in Israel in May 2021, where 148 cases of myocarditis were reported within 30 days of immunization, usually after a second dose.
This prompted the Israeli Ministry of Health to launch an investigation into a possible link between myocarditis and vaccination cases. Subsequently, other cases of myocarditis and pericarditis have been reported in many countries.
