Vaccine skeptics in particular repeatedly cast doubts about the benefits of corona vaccines. But the spades saves lives. This has now been confirmed by a further investigation in Europe: there are now around 500,000 people who have been saved from death by the vaccine.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 vaccinations are alone in Europe according to the World Health Organization (WHO) at least 470,000 people in the age group over 60 have been saved from death. This is shown by a study in 33 European countries published in cooperation with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in the magazine “Eurosurveillance”, said the WHO European Office in Copenhagen.

This estimate does not include the cases that were saved by vaccinating people under 60 years of age. WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge said the vaccines against Covid-19 are a miracle of modern science. This study makes it clear that they have exactly the promised effect, “namely saving lives and offering a very high level of protection against serious illness and death”.

In some countries, the death toll would have been twice as high without the vaccines. It is therefore crucial that all Member States achieve high vaccination coverage in the risk groups as soon as possible.

Countries with lower vaccination rates should continue to give priority to the most vulnerable and protect vulnerable groups as soon as possible. As of December 2019, countries in the WHO European Region have reportedly reported over 1.5 million confirmed deaths from Covid-19, of which 90.2 percent were in the age group over 60.
