The Israeli army has arrested the last two Palestinians who escaped from a maximum-security prison nearly two weeks ago. The two were arrested during a raid on their hometown of Jenin. They surrendered without violence.
Six inmates escaped from their prison in northern Israel early this month. It involved five members of the Islamic Jihad terror group and a former commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Four of them were serving life sentences.
Israeli authorities were deeply embarrassed when the six men escaped from their cells through a tunnel. The country therefore launched a major search operation. In the Palestinian territories, the men were seen as heroes. For example, protesters carried their portraits with them during protests.
Four days after the escape, two fugitives were arrested in the north of the country. A few hours later, two others followed in the same region.
