Large fire in refugee camp on Greek island of Samos

The camp, which was to be closed later this month, has been the subject of several fires. Several men were arrested on suspicion of arson last September.

News shelter

About 300 people remain in Vathy waiting to be transferred to a new relief camp on the island. This refugee camp, which is closed with barbed wire, was inaugurated this weekend.

According to the Greek government, living conditions in the camp are much better than in the old camps, which were often overcrowded and where people lived in poor conditions.

Gates closed

To access the new camp, a chip card must be used. In the evenings and nights the gates remain completely closed. Human rights groups, including the United Nations Refugee Agency, believe that the restrictions on access are far too strict.
