ME volleyball players. Poland will fight Serbia for bronze

Polish volleyball players will play in Katowice’s Spodek against Serbs for the bronze medal of the European championship. In the previous edition of this tournament, the Polish team won the gold medal, and the team from the Balkans won the title.

Both teams were rather favorites of the Saturday semi-finals, but had to recognize the superiority of their rivals. The Poles lost 1: 3 to the Slovenes, with the second set 30:32 and the fourth 35:37. In turn, the Serbs, for whom during their absence from the Olympic Games in Tokyo European Championships were the target event this season, they succumbed to the rejuvenated representation of Italy 1: 3.

Led by coach Vital Heynen, the white and red team may speak of a double disappointment this year. The world champions, one of the main favorites of the Games, were eliminated in the quarter-finals in the Japanese capital.

On Sunday they will fight for the 10th ever medal of the European Championships. So far, they also stood on the lowest step of the podium – apart from the previous edition – in 1967 and 2011.

The duel with the Serbs will start at 17.30. Three hours later, the Italians, whose coach is Ferdinando De Giorgi – a former Polish coach – will face the Slovenes.

The Italians have been the continent’s champions six times, but they have been waiting for the seventh title since 2005. They were in the final eight years ago previously. The Slovenes will play in the decisive match for the third time, both of them so far (2015, 2019) have lost.
