More than 200 million parcels shipped in one year, a record

La Poste sent 202.1 million parcels in 2021, a record in the company’s history and an increase of 9.6% compared to 2020. For letters, the decline continues with 1.811 billion missives distributed, ie 3.3% less than the previous year.

To ensure its services, La Poste created, in 2021, 809 additional full-time positions in the logistics sector, the company said on Tuesday. It salutes the “exceptional commitment” of its employees “in these difficult times”.

The increase in the volume of parcels is due to e-commerce. The latter has indeed developed strongly under the impetus of restrictions linked to the coronavirus and teleworking.

The jump was 9.6% compared to the first year of the pandemic (2020: 184.4 million packages). Compared to 2019, this rate even climbs to around 35%. The dynamic is the opposite for letters, whose total volume has decreased by around 30% over the past 10 years.

This development confirms La Poste in its decision to have grouped the processing of letters and parcels at the organizational level at the beginning of 2021. This consolidation within the same logistics unit preserves jobs and ensures flexibility in this extraordinary period, notes the ‘business.

Double sorting capacity

Swiss Post also expects parcel volumes to increase in the future. To cope with this, it intends to double sorting capacity by 2030. Concretely, the yellow giant will invest by then around 1.5 billion additional francs in the development of its sorting and distribution infrastructure.

This notably involves the development and modernization of existing centres, but also the construction of new regional parcel centres. La Poste also plans to create around 1,500 more jobs by 2030.
