The path of the song. Mārtiņš Brauns

Congratulating composer Mārtiņš Brauns on his 70th anniversary, short musical stories have been made on Latvian Television ”The path of the song. Mārtiņš Brauns”, In which the composer’s songwriters share their messages about significant, emotional songs.

“Mārtiņš called me and said that Uģis Brikmanis had sent him a poem. He wrote down the music for him and wanted me to perform the song. It was very simple,” says RTU men’s choir “Gaudeamus” conductor Ivars Cinkuss, “Baltic Way was 30 years old , and in 2019 we premiered the song in the Garden of Fate. “

“It was an SMS – not that poem, not that prose. Why? Why is he sending it to me – I thought then,” says composer Mārtiņš Brauns. “Then an accident happened and Ugis was in the hospital, he left us! His last text message to me is still on the phone.

It’s one of the few songs I wrote on my own initiative, no one ordered it for me.

Ugis was such a motivator, without him it is difficult for me. It is difficult for me to create something new! “The text of the message sent by Uģis Brikmanis was:” Men will come from the forests of Kurzeme and ask if the girl, my beautiful Latvia, sings in your time? Is it silent? “

These words inspired the composer, and a song has been made, which will premiere on Latvian television on September 17 – the 70th anniversary of Mārtiņš Brauns!

What is the jubilee time in music, what like-minded people see in music and what Mārtiņš Brauns himself sees – these are the questions you want to ask now.

“I can be grateful to Pēteris Plakidis, who dragged me to the National Theater to be the head of the musical department, I was still a student, those were my dreams that came true,” remembers Mārtiņš Brauns. was another job started. So what will take the place? And he suggested me. In this way, he helped me get to film music and involved me in theater. What was interesting about the National was that, for example, when staging a French play, I studied French music. The easiest way to imitate the Spaniards, they are characterized by harmony. When writing “Julia Caesar”, I had to think about what Roman language or Roman music could be – these tasks were difficult.

Since the actor portrays something, so do I portray. I couldn’t lose anything from my brain, but the music was Brown.

I was most influenced by Indian music, they are Indian horns, because I assumed when writing “Maugli” that “Maugli” is the jungle of India. “

Mārtiņš Brauns grew up in a family of doctors and admits that he wanted to become a doctor himself, but at the age of five his parents realized that the boy has absolute hearing and directed himself to music.

The composer also mentions the difficult, long piano lessons, which turned into great pleasure when he “met” the blues: when you’re creative, when you listen to the blues, feel – it’s all in there, there’s not just laziness, in jazz too… I do it now, I have everything on my feet, I just do … Nothing, it’s math, it’s caia I have all the emotions you have. in concerts I like to put “Divorce blues” together with “Love is like fire”, because they both talk to each other, one says away from here, and the other says: “Everything can be taken away from us, only love can not.” Good end to the concert! “

The song “Love is Like Fire” is from the play “Sirano de Beržeraks”, performed by Nick Matveyev in the group “Sīpoli”, now, performing with Brown, it is sung by Ieva Sutugova. The author of the lyrics is the poet Jānis Peters, who evaluates in a telephone conversation that she

collaboration with the composer usually culminates in a song that sounds over time, and is long forgotten who and for what purpose it was written, because “Mārtiņš Brauns is a nerve in Latvian music”.

The composer does not like to be “exaggerated”. Most of his musical works are commissioned works in the best sense of the word, when there is a collaboration between a director, a poet, others involved in cinema or theater: “I was no longer a ‘murderer’, I obeyed orders. After ordering, I can talk about an order when a blonde orders music for advertising, but is far from musical feeling. We have an extraordinary shout – buy … It’s post-Sovietism, she sounds twice as loud as a movie, and the worst thing is when it is inserted into symphonic music! “

When it comes to commercials, the conversation grows into the composer’s opinion about the word, the power of the word and its meaning in the song.

“I don’t have the motivation to write some kind of pers.

the composer expresses his attitude towards the lyrics, “When I was a pupil or student, I lay in bed, made gogelmogeli Raw eggs with sugar, and [turēju] some 10 poetry books next and divorced and looking for a poem. Sometimes empty. Then I realized that I should not read 100 poems a day, it is missed, read 10, then someone might refer. If I look at the Latvian classics – Emils Darzins, Jāzeps Vītols – I will not compare myself with these peaks, no, but the principles that are based on wonderful poetry – Auseklis, Bārda, Aspazija, Rainis – are a fact. Music is usually influenced by poetry. ”

Mārtiņš admits that sometimes no music or any new idea comes to mind, then Uģis Brikmanis has always come to the rescue, he has been a very good activator. For example, “Seven Songs about the Dream Spirit” with the translation of Knut Skujenieks was the idea of Uģis Brikmanis. Brown read poetry, but at the first moment it did not form an association with music, then conductor Kaspars Putniņš also came to the rescue, and under the influence of both, music was created, which now seems to the composer to be one of the most beautiful of his own choral music:

“Most of my songs don’t deserve me – I just ‘shot, Hitler ordered!’” (laughs)

More

Currently, encouraged by producer Jānis Kļaviņš, Mārtiņš Brauns is preparing for a big concert, which could take place in the autumn around Mārtiņnapas. He says: “There is a lot of work on the part of the management. There will be a choir in the first part, a group and soloists in the second part. I will write a score for specific instruments, we will work with the conductor Sigvards Kļavas. is dear, for example, from Rainis “Daugava” sweetheart is “Daugavmate” – “How not to love the Daugava, you brought up my little one, I grew up in love” – strong I turned, and in the end there will also be a “Skrobes song” (“Anger Song”), as it is relevant now. Rainis has another lament song in the text, but I say – Raini, what are you doing? I took the key to the text to the rage – he breaks, but there is love for his homeland. Another thing

I no longer have a motivation for patriotic songs, absolutely none, because “everything can be taken away from us,” it’s pornographic – it’s already taken away by what else you sing. “

Mārtiņš Brauns is and can be harsh and open, although sometimes he adds that it may be an exaggeration. Speaking of music, too, he feels that it lacks depth and meaning today:

“I see that I’m inappropriate, I don’t fit in here, it’s not my interests, my music that sounds like a stylized disco. We call him what we want – techno or pop. It’s a march with the failure of the buffs …

If it has a terrible outlet with on-call phrases in poetry, sorry, I won’t follow. I have enough funds to not pretend to be younger than I am. My time is my time, but it is temporary, and all times are temporary. ”

This is a time of anniversaries, but Mārtiņš Brauns does not want praise and praise: “Thank you to my parents, my employers and my fools, including the poor, who provoked me to anger. in self-isolation, because the anniversary is nothing, well, and then that the years change! “

If we remember Mārtiņš Brauns’ relatively funny, playful songs – “Mom, I want”, “Re-Re, Mi-Mi, Fa”, “Putniņa must be caught” – they are not, in the composer’s words, “souvenir songs”, they have someone protest, possibly a simple protest against seriousness.

“I protest against fake seriousness,” says the composer.

“I would venture to say that one of the most disgusting qualities at all levels is to lie. Both at the level of government and at the level of the simplest man. Keep your mouth shut if you don’t want to tell the truth, but don’t lie!

You are asked, and you lie; better answer. In big serious things, health, politics, and so lies… It has been done to eliminate all cultural life. I do not think it is malice, it is total illiteracy. Whoever pays for it, who is interested, we see the surface of the iceberg, but we do not see the mountain that destroys it all. “Is the girl singing to me?” – therefore I ask Uga and in my song and in the name “In your time.”

The song “In Your Time” will also be performed in Mārtiņš Brauns’ big concert around Mārtiņ diena, in November.

Conductor Ivars Cinkuss admits: “This is a two-part song. One part is Mārtiņš the intellectual, and the other is Mārtiņš, a folk composer. in one hour of the night the boys will come ”- there he puts his theatrical thinking, which is quite complicated. In some places she does not get into his hands so easily. That’s why, I think, she won’t immediately go to nations like “Sun, Thunder, Daugava”. But when the choir will deal with it, it will also sound in the pines of Mežaparks, because the composer’s message is important.

He reveals himself to his beloved Latvia, and it is clear to everyone what he means by that, what his love is, how great it is. He can be absolutely theatrical in music. “
