Study: New result on thrombosis after corona vaccination

After vaccinations against the COVID-19 disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, thrombosis occurred in some people. Some of them ended fatally. Younger people in particular were affected. Researchers have now gained new insights into the interplay between vaccination and the rare clinical picture.

Now there are new study results on thromboses after SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations.

Potentially dangerous side effect

According to a recent Message a research team led by Professor Dr. Tamam Bakchoul from the Center for Clinical and Experimental Transfusion Medicine at the University Hospital Tübingen investigated the development, diagnosis and possible treatment methods of vaccine-induced immunothrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) in several studies.

This condition is a rare but potentially dangerous side effect of vector-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. Patients with VITT develop blood clots, often in unusual places such as the veins in the brain or abdomen, and have low platelet counts for up to six weeks after vaccination.

A study result has now been published in the renowned medical journal “New England Journal of Medicine” released.

Relationship not yet clarified

The Tübingen research group has already shown in previous studies that the formation of antibodies against a protein called “platelet factor 4 (PF4)” is the cause of VITT.

These antibodies are said to be able to activate the platelets, cause blood clots and a decrease in the number of platelets. The connection between a vaccination and the formation of anti-PF4 antibodies has not yet been clarified.

A possible reason was the cross-reactivity between antibodies that are developed after vaccination against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and antibodies against PF4.

Immune response does not lead to the formation of anti-PF4 antibodies

In the current study, the researchers examined the relationship between the immune response to the vaccine and the development of anti-PF4 antibodies.

In vaccinated medical staff (n = 101) and in patients (n = 59) with clinical suspicion of VITT after vaccination with Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca), the scientists compared the anti-PF4 antibodies and the antibodies against various antigenic points of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (spike trimer, receptor binding domain [RBD], S1, S2).

The experts found no correlation between the amount of anti-PF4 and anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in any of the groups. In addition, according to the report, the values ​​of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies did not differ significantly between vaccinated people without complications and patients with VITT.

The authors therefore come to the conclusion that the immune response against SARS-CoV-2 proteins does not lead to the formation of anti-PF4 antibodies at VITT.

According to the researchers, this study has contributed to a better understanding of the interplay between vaccination and the rare clinical picture of VITT. It is now necessary to further research the therapeutic approaches for this disease. To this end, the research team is currently investigating the different effects of anticoagulants (blood thinners). (ad)
