Since the end of May, they have been digging in the center of the city next to the Church of Our Lady. It is already the third time in Bruges that they have found such a burial vault. “Yet we find them very exceptional and often they are in poor condition. But it has been well preserved,” says one of the archaeologists Frederik Roelens. “The burial vault is completely intact and the paintings on those walls are still in very good condition.”
According to Roelens, the paintings follow a typical pattern. “On the long sides we always see an image of one or more angels waving a censer. You can also see a drawing of “Mary with the Child”, which is often depicted on a beautiful Gothic sofa.”
