Pochettino: PSG hope to convince Mbappe to stay

Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino gave a less definitive assessment of the prospects of Kylian Mbappe staying with the team, but said that “the situation is still open” amid Real Madrid’s interest in the player.

The name of Mbappe, whose contract with Saint-Germain ends at the end of the current season, has been linked to a move to Real Madrid, and the French player revealed his desire to move to Real at the beginning of the season.

Leonardo, the sporting director of Paris Saint-Germain, has strongly criticized Real Madrid for its “disrespectful” behavior in the pursuit of Mbappe over the past two years.

Leonardo was confident about his club’s chances of extending Mbappe’s contract (22 years), but Pochettino was less optimistic about his assessment of Mbappe’s future with the French capital team.

Pochettino said in an interview with Spanish radio station Marca and Kobe: “Mbappe is fine, he is a calm boy with a strong personality, a very social personality, he is clear about things and loves football, he is very mature for a young man of 22 years.”

He added: “Kylian will make the decision he has to make and the club will do everything possible to keep him, because we are talking about one of the best players in the world at 22 years old.”

He added: “I trust the fact that the situation is still open and in the future anything can happen. The position he took a few months ago may change in the future. Certainly, Saint-Germain is a club that has ambition and the ability to convince him and offer him things so that he can stay and be happy.” The chances of him changing his mind remain.”

Pochettino also gave an update on former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who joined PSG on a free transfer in the last summer transfer window, but did not participate in any matches due to injuries.

Ramos, 35, is close to getting back in shape after a disappointing start in Paris.

Saint-Germain will meet Angers on Friday, before facing Leipzig in the Champions League on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, Ramos has not yet started training with the team, but he is close,” Pochettino said.

He added: “We are happy with this development, he is a great champion, someone who has no doubts about his footballing potential and talent, he is not having a good time now, but he is strong.”
