Last night, after days of searching and weeks of inquiry, the Human Rights Watch Truth and Accountability Project managed to finally track down the individuals responsible for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands airstrike that killed 165 people. As a result of their work, HRW has identified 45 individuals in connection with the fatal airstrike in the early hours of August 15, 2017, in which an Australian military plane travelled over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in search of suspected insurgents.HRW previously identified 50 individuals who are responsible for the killings, but the UN Truth and Accountability Project has now identified 45 of them, including 19 members of the military. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands airstrike is one of the worst tragedy in the history of Myanmar. It was carried out by the Myanmar junta in retaliation for the independence of the Rohingya minority in Myanmar, and it has led to the death of more than 1,000 people.

The victims were targeted indiscriminately, and all but five of the fatalities were civilians. Rohingya residents of the islands, many of whom were%-Widad Zaw Htay, the military leader of Andaman and Nicobar Islands-were among the initial victims.HRW has obtained firsthand accounts of the massacre from survivors and relatives of the dead, and the footage it has seen confirms that the military killed entire villages, not just suspected insurgents.

The investigation is ongoing and HRW is working with local partners to bring those responsible to justice. HRW also wishes to ask the Australian military and its operators home soil for their continued responsibility in this atrocity.
