The Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) spent 6 million 304 thousand pesos in the acquisition of four boxes of the drug Spinraza or Nusinersen, which is considered the most expensive drug in the world.
Through an international procedure, the military agency headed by General Luis Cresencio Sandoval González directly awarded a contract to the company Farmacéuticos Maypo SA de CV for the purchase of the drug on August 12, 2021.
Although, it is an obligation of all federal agencies to make transparent and publish all the contracting information on the public procurement platform CompraNet, in this case Sedena did not publish the file that contains the report with the relevant data of the contract, therefore that it is not possible to know more details of it.
Spinraza or Nusinersen is a drug used for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy, a neurological, genetic and incurable disease that is considered the second main cause of genetic neuromuscular diseases in the world and the most common neurodegenerative disease in childhood.
Farmaceuticals Maypo is one of the 10 companies that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador pointed out at the beginning of his administration for having been favored in the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto with more than 335 billion pesos in the purchase of medicines and healing materials.
Even, for this same reason, the president signed a memorandum dated March 20, 2019 asking that three companies, including Maypo, be prevented from participating in bids or direct awards for having sold to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS ) and the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers a total of 34 thousand 280 million pesos in 2018, that is, 62.4 percent of all purchases from both institutions.
“As is known, three suppliers of medicines and healing materials, the companies Grupo Fármacos Especializados SA de CV, Distribuidora Internacional de Medicamentos y Equipo Médico SA de CV and Maypo, sold 34 thousand 280 million to the ISSSTE and IMSS in 2018. of pesos, 62.4 percent of all purchases made by these institutions, not including those acquired by the Ministry of Health and local governments.
“This fact is, by all accounts, immoral and in violation of article 28 of the Constitution, which prohibits the existence of monopolies. In view of the foregoing, I request that, in accordance with the legality of the matter, participation in bids or direct awards to said companies be prevented until we know, for sure, if there was no corruption and influence peddling in these operations. ”Indicates the document signed by President López Obrador four months into his administration.
Despite the memorandum, only for this year Farmaceuticos Maypo has obtained a total of 1,120 contracts, most of them by direct award, for a total of 3,000,802 million 577 thousand 238 pesos, to provide medicines and other medical supplies, mainly to agencies such as the Mexican Social Security Institute, according to a review made by El Sol de México of the CompraNet databases.
And so far this administration, the pharmaceutical company has already added more than three thousand contracts for an amount of six thousand 248 million pesos. More than 90 percent of the contracts were made by direct award or by invitation to at least three people.
Not only is Pharmaceutical Maypo. The other two designated hoarding companies have also been favored with millionaire contracts during the current administration despite the president’s veto.
