Shortlist for the German Book Prize with equal numbers

Three men and three women are on the shortlist for the German Book Prize 2021. The Austrian Norbert Gstrein (“The Second Jacob”), the Austrian Monika Helfer (“Vati”), Christian Kracht (“Eurotrash”), Thomas Kunst (“Zandschower Klinken”), Mithu Sanyal (“Identitti”) and Antje Rávik Strubel (“Blue Woman”), as the jury announced today in Frankfurt.

The six finalists showed “the stylistic, formal and thematic richness of contemporary German-language literature”, said jury spokesman Knut Cordsen. They also testified “to the immense desire and high skill in telling stories”.

Announcement in mid-October

Which book the jury will ultimately award as the best novel of 2021 will be determined in four weeks: The award given by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels will be presented on the eve of the Frankfurt Book Fair – this year on October 18. The winner will receive 25,000 euros, the other five authors on the shortlist will each receive 2,500 euros.

The jury had viewed 230 titles this year. At the end of August, the jury announced the 20 titles on the longlist. Franz-Arthur Goldschmidt, Heinz Strunk, Franzobel and Sasha Marianna Salzmann have since left.
