South Florida musicians lent their talents to Disney’s latest movie

MIAMI. – Three musicians from South Florida lent their talents to the new Disney movie “Encanto”.

With Grammy Award winner Guillermo Vadalá on bass, Gene Paul Gayol on keyboard and Tato Marenco on bagpipes and the millos, traditional Colombian wind instruments, they gave life to the title track of the latest Disney film, which is opens in theaters on Thanksgiving.

“I am extremely honored to be part of Disney canon,” Gayol said. “I never imagined being part of one of the classic Disney songs, so it’s really an honor,” said Vadalá.

The Disney movie surrounds the story of a magical Colombian family. Marenco says that the music is authentic, with champeta, vallenato, which is Caribbean music from Colombia, and the sounds of the accordion, flutes and voices heard in the song make it true to its roots.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, from the Broadway hit “Hamilton,” wrote the song and is sung by Colombian superstar Carlos Vives.

“Seeing all of this come together is just incredible and it makes history to have that representation,” Gayol said.

Each of its parts was recorded individually, in August, at the Hit Factory Criteria Studios, in North Miami.

“Unfortunately, due to Covid, we had to do the session remotely. So they were giving us the address from an iPad and talking to us via zoom, ”Gayol said.

Guillermo and Tato said they could hear the song right when they were doing it in the studio, so it was great, but when it’s your part, you get nervous because you feel like people are waiting for you.

“The result was such a beautiful song that we are very happy to be a part of,” said Vadalá.

For the first time, an authentic Colombian folk sound will reach American audiences in a Disney film, and for Marenco, who is from Colombia, it is a source of personal pride.

“Recording bagpipes and mills for the first time in a Disney movie is incredible. It’s a dream come true, “said Marenco.
