Game of Thrones, The Heirs of the Earth, The path or Ocho apellidos catalanes. And is that after the phenomenon of HBO, the residents of the Old Quarter have already camouflaged themselves in the physiognomy of a five-star set, which is both capable of becoming one of the Seven Kingdoms and to put the city mask of the early fifteenth century. In fact, the avalanche of filming requests has already made the stage the most requested location in the Girona region.
The formula for success is a combination of “charm, good heritage conservation, good accessibility and deployment of services (essential for large producers) and the word-of-mouth phenomenon.” This is the diagnosis made by the coordinator of the Girona Film Office, Laura Merino. The presence of “major shootings,” he says, has caused a “striking effect” that has placed the city on the international film map. Focusing on the pre-pandemic years, in 2019 Girona hosted a total of 58 productions (50 by Catalan producers; 4 national; 2 French; 1 American and 1 Japanese); and in 2018, with also 58 titles (36 were Catalan productions, 10 national, 2 German, 2 Portuguese, and 1 French, Russian, English, South Korean, Chinese, Ukrainian, Brazilian and American). In 2020, despite the impact of the pandemic, Girona recorded a total of 32 audiovisual productions – with titles such as Las leyes de la frontera or The path, with an economic impact for the city of € 140,000. Of the total number of permits managed, however, not all are feature films or series, as the registered requests also include short films, academic exercises, reports, documentaries, commercials and photo shoots.
In recent years, the rise of Sant Domènec, the stairs of the Cathedral and the Jewish Quarter have been gaining prominence and have become the busiest locations for producers, although Merino acknowledges that “local creators are looking for things different because these scenarios are already very popular.
Due to the distribution potential of the series, tourism motivated by visiting the stages of the most acclaimed series has become a phenomenon that has begun to take place among conventional tourism. This is the case, for example, of the South Korean series Legend of the blue sea and Los recuerdos de la Alhambra, which after being shot in the Old Quarter and viewed in their home country, have caused an avalanche of Asian tourism, which has landed in Girona to get to know first hand the locations where the productions were shot.
More than 200 shootings a year
Filming requests in the Girona counties are in a sweet moment of stabilization with an average of 213 annual shootings in the last five years. In 2020, despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, 118 productions could be made. In terms of the most requested locations in the province, the Old Town of Girona tops the ranking, followed by Cala Boadella in Lloret de Mar, Lake Banyoles, Gola del Ter beach, the Natural Park of La Garrotxa, the Santa Clotilde Gardens in Lloret de Mar, the old town of Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués, the coves of Begur and the Marimurtra Botanical Garden in Blanes.
