US developer negotiates with Capcom & Disney to develop remastered version of fighting game “MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2” –AUTOMATON

Capcom’s fighting game, which started in 2000, 21 years ago, and was later ported to consoles and mobiles.MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2: New Age of Heroes』. It seems that developer Digital Eclipse is negotiating with Capcom and Disney to develop a remastered version of this work.Overseas mediaVGCEtc. are reporting.

“MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2” is a 2D fighting game in which more than 50 Capcom and Marvel characters appear. From the Capcom side, Ryu and Guile from the “Street Fighter” series, Morrigan and Valletta from the “Vampire” series, Mega Man and Strider Hiryu will appear. And from the Marvel side, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Cyclops, Captain America, Hulk, etc. will participate and you can enjoy the 3on3 system.

The Dreamcast version of this work was released in the same year as the arcade version went live, and then ported to PS2 / Xbox. Furthermore, in 2009, the PS3 / Xbox 360 version with HD graphics was released, and in 2012, the iOS version was also distributed. However, all versions are currently out of distribution. Probably because the license agreement with Marvel has ended. Since then, the console generation has advanced by two generations, and the story of the remastered version has suddenly come up.

Mike Mika, the representative of US-based developer Digital Eclipse, appeared on the YouTube channel GamerHubTV interview program on September 16 and talked about “MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2”. Digital Eclipse is a studio known for working on transplanted works such as “Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection”, “Rockman Classics Collection” and “SAMURAI SPIRITS NEOGEO COLLECTION” in recent years.

In an interview, Mika commented that she was the last person involved in “MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2” and that she felt like a separated child. Digital Eclipse is in a close position as it has absorbed and merged Backbone Entertainment, which was in charge of developing the PS3 / Xbox 360 version. He said he had just begun discussions between Capcom and Disney, which now owns Marvel, about the development of a remastered version of the film (We’ve begun some discussions on that right now).

The original reason was that Digital Eclipse carried out crowdfunding this year and raised about 10 million dollars (about 1.1 billion yen). They solicited support to promote transplantation and remastering, which is the studio’s core business. And one of the most requested porting titles from investors was “MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2”.

According to Mike Mika, both Capcom and Disney are clearly aware of the request for porting this work. And they are starting talks with both companies to see what they can do. However, he commented that Capcom and Disney will be the final decision. Both are very large companies, and they are nailing them so as not to have excessive expectations, saying that there may be many reasons for transplanting or not. Since it is not clear which one to fall into, Digital Eclipse is working to gain the understanding of both companies.

Whether “MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2: New Age of Heroes” will be beautifully revived and playable on current consoles and PCs has not yet been determined. It is one of the most popular works in the series, so I hope it will be realized.
