Besides his artistic activities known to the audience, Huu Tien is also a lecturer. After graduating with a major in Directing from Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema in 2010, he worked as a teaching assistant here.

2021, Huu Tien studied for a master’s degree at Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema, 1 year later decided to quit his teaching assistant position to focus on studying. Also in the same year, he became a lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City College of Culture and Arts, in charge of the subjects Performance Techniques and Stage Directing. Currently, the artist has completed his master’s degree program and plans to defend his thesis next year.

At school, Huu Tien is famous for his rigorous pedagogical methods. For new students, he always chooses to speak frankly about harsh professional practices so that they stop daydreaming, prepare mentally and focus on training themselves.

Huu Tien was called a “witch” by many students because he brought sandals and rattan whips to 3rd year classes and above. He does not mind being videotaped and always shares his views on the whip and life with the children.

“After 3 years, if you spend so much money from your parents, your own time and the enthusiasm of your teachers and still make basic acting mistakes, do you deserve to be caned? I spank you because I don’t want to.” When they leave the studio, they have to cry, get scolded, and even get kicked out because they can’t do their job, affecting the crew. Out there, people just scold them about which school they went to and which teacher they played so poorly. Listen. I said, you guys also feel worthy of receiving the whip,” the artist said.

Thanks to the strict teaching method, many of Huu Tien’s students such as Huynh Thanh Truc, Trinh Tai, Huynh Nhu Dan… became good people, became good professionals, and were highly appreciated by directors.

Artist Huu Tien was also not gentle when teaching his daughter Thuy Tien, who once won the runner-up title in a beauty contest. In addition to “locking his child in the house until he turned 18”, he confessed that he had beaten his child twice.

During the years Thuy Tien was growing up, Huu Tien was satisfied with almost everything about girls except fighting with classmates at school from 6th to 11th grade.

In 6th grade at Chu Van An Secondary School, Ho Chi Minh City, Thuy Tien and Phuong Trang – Angela Phuong Trinh’s younger sister – had a disagreement so they arranged to “talk” in the bathroom, then got into a fight, as a result, Huu Tien’s daughter won.

Returning home, Thuy Tien was beaten by her father with a whip. She angrily said, “Dad, you don’t love me. I was not born to be beaten by you,” then left home for nearly a day.

In 9th grade, the beauty received a heavy slap from her father for the same reason. Huu Tien said that Thuy Tien was ready to fight regardless of whether the opponent was male or female. Many male students who were beaten were so embarrassed that they did not dare to tell anyone.

“I’m not sure who’s bullying who, so I don’t have the right to defend my child. And the one who wins always has to take full responsibility and reputation, that’s why I beat my child. I was offered a job by the school twice/ months from when Tien was in 6th grade to 11th grade, is there anyone’s daughter like that?”, he shared.

According to Huu Tien, hitting a child is a forced action, and can only be taught verbally. From a young age, Thuy Tien was independent, understanding, and grew up to be stronger, more decisive, and financially free, which made her father feel very secure.

In addition to being a lecturer, Huu Tien also runs a child talent training center. The company is not big, but he and his employees all work with enthusiasm and passion. The two most proud and hopeful artist students are Ngan Chi and Mai Cat Vy.

At age 53, artist Huu Tien wants nothing more than his current life. After many ups and downs, he wanted to live alone, focus on work, especially training, and passing on the fire to the next generation of actors and directors.
