Tamaulipas state officials said rescuers worked all night, digging through the rubble to search for 30 people believed to be trapped after the incident on October 1. Rescue workers and aid soldiers had to work under floodlights, using rescue dogs and digging equipment to locate survivors.

Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez of Tampico Roman Catholic Church said the church roof suddenly collapsed while parishioners were worshiping. “Right now, rescue work is still going on, the situation is very chaotic,” Bishop Armando said in a post shared online.
The cause of the accident is still unknown. Building collapses often occur during earthquakes in Mexico. However, Mexico’s National Seismological Service did not report any seismic activity strong enough to cause such damage at the time of the cathedral’s roof collapse.
