The four buckets every report shows
Organic Search (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo). Direct (no referrer — brand traffic + dark social). Referral (links from other websites). Social (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Reddit, TikTok). Some tools add Paid, Email, and an AI bucket.
What a healthy mix looks like
For a content site: Organic 40-60%, Direct 25-40%, Referral 5-15%, Social 5-15%. For a B2B SaaS site: Direct 30-50% (brand), Organic 20-40%, Referral 10-20%. For a brand-new site: Direct should be small (you have no brand yet) — if it dominates, your tracking is misclassifying.
Channel concentration risk
If one channel is over 70% of your traffic, you are fragile. A Google algorithm update, a single referring site removing links, or a social platform changing its algorithm can drop you 50% in a week. Healthy sites diversify across three or four channels at minimum.
Reading the trend, not the snapshot
A single month's mix tells you less than the trend. Are referrers growing? Is organic flat while social is up? Is Direct creeping because branding finally landed? Compare month-over-month and year-over-year. Sudden swings deserve investigation.
Common red flags
One referrer = 80%+ of referrals: you depend on that partner. Organic flat for 6+ months: content strategy needs revisiting. Social = 95% one platform: that platform owns you. Direct dominant on a new site: usually a tracking misclassification.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Organic Search bigger than my Search Console clicks?
Search Console is Google-only. Your Organic bucket includes Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Yandex and others. A 10-20% gap is normal.
Should I optimise for the channel I am weakest in?
Usually optimise the one you are best at and broadest at, until it shows diminishing returns. Then diversify.
