How BYOViral Global Stats Works

A transparent, pageview-based aggregation of usage trends across public websites in the BYOViral network — built privacy-first, with sample size and update frequency shown openly.

What the data represents

BYOViral Global Stats summarizes anonymous pageview activity from public websites in the BYOViral network. Private websites are excluded. The numbers should be understood as BYOViral public-network trends, not as a complete measurement of the entire internet.

The goal is not to claim a perfect measurement of every browser, device or country worldwide. The goal is to provide a clear, privacy-conscious view of real traffic trends across participating public websites — with the sample size and update frequency openly displayed so readers can interpret the data responsibly.

How percentages are calculated

BYOViral calculates percentages from pageviews. For each dimension (browser, OS, device, country, search engine, screen resolution, language), the pageviews for each value are divided by the total pageviews in that dimension during the selected time period.

For example, if Chrome generated 600,000 pageviews and the entire dimension (all browsers) generated 1,000,000 pageviews in the last 30 days, Chrome's share for that window is 60%.

You can switch between 7-day, 30-day, 90-day and 365-day windows on every dimension page. The default is 30 days.

Why pageviews instead of unique visitors

Pageviews show actual browsing activity across participating websites. A browser, device or search engine that generates more pageviews receives a larger share of the report.

Unique-visitor models are sensitive to how a platform identifies a "unique" visitor — usually with cookies, fingerprints or persistent identifiers. BYOViral does not set cookies in visitor browsers, so a pageview-based model reflects what the platform actually measures without making assumptions about identity.

Privacy approach

Global Stats are aggregated. They are not designed to identify individual visitors and individual visitor data is never published in Global Stats.

  • BYOViral does not set cookies in visitor browsers. Sessions are inferred server-side from a fingerprint hash with a 30-minute idle window.
  • Private websites are excluded from Global Stats aggregations entirely. Only websites whose owners have explicitly set their site to Public contribute to the public-network numbers.
  • BYOViral does not sell visitor data or share it with third parties. The badge and tracking script make a single network call back to BYOViral's API and nothing else.

Limitations to keep in mind

Because the BYOViral network is still growing, smaller samples may be affected by traffic spikes, bot activity, geographic concentration, or the mix of participating websites at any given moment. We display sample size openly so readers can interpret data with appropriate caution.

  • Sample size matters. See the Sample Size page for current pageview totals broken down by country, with confidence labels.
  • Network composition. The BYOViral public network is not a random sample of the internet. It reflects whatever websites have chosen to install BYOViral and make their stats public.
  • Bots and automated traffic. Server-side filtering removes obviously automated requests, but no filter is perfect. Recent data may be revised after additional bot traffic is filtered.
  • Search engine attribution. Engines are detected from the referrer host. Visitors landing via privacy browsers, dark-social channels, or apps that strip referrers are counted as direct rather than search.

Update frequency

Aggregates are refreshed daily after the rollup process runs (currently scheduled for 01:30 server time). New pageviews collected during the day appear in Global Stats the following morning. Recent days may be revised if late-arriving data or bot filtering changes the count.
