Three numbers people call "traffic"
When someone says "my traffic," they usually mean one of: pageviews (every page load), sessions (visits, grouped by 30-minute idle window), or visitors (distinct people). These three numbers always disagree. Pick which one you mean before sharing with a client.
The four traffic types
Organic search — visitors arriving from Google/Bing/DuckDuckGo. Direct — visitors with no referrer header (typed URL, bookmark, dark social). Referral — visitors from other websites. Social — visitors from social networks. Some platforms split out Paid Search, Email, and Display as additional buckets.
What is NOT website traffic
Bots, crawlers and prefetch requests should not count. Server-log requests are not visitor traffic — they include every asset fetch, every favicon, every crawler. Pingdom or uptime-monitor checks. RSS-feed fetches. Anything where there was no human eyeball looking at a rendered page.
How to grow each traffic type
Organic: publish content matching real search queries; build internal-linking density. Direct: grow brand awareness; appear in offline channels. Referral: earn links through original data, useful tools, or partner placements. Social: publish content that gets shared, in the format each platform rewards.
How BYOViral splits your traffic
BYOViral splits incoming pageviews into four buckets (Direct, Search, Referral, Social) plus an AI bucket for ChatGPT/Claude/Perplexity referrers when those send a referrer header. See the live network-wide search engine share as a reference baseline.
Frequently asked questions
What is "good" website traffic?
Whatever your business needs. 100 highly-targeted monthly visitors on a B2B SaaS site can produce more pipeline than 10,000 untargeted blog readers.
How is traffic counted differently across tools?
Pageviews match. Sessions usually match. Visitor counts differ depending on cookie / fingerprint method.
Does AI traffic count as Search or Direct?
Depends. ChatGPT and Perplexity sometimes send a Referer header — when they do, it shows as Search (or a new AI bucket if your analytics tool supports it). When they do not, it shows as Direct.
