JSON validator

JSON Syntax Verification and Structural Formatting

The JSON Validator evaluates JavaScript Object Notation data payloads against the official RFC 8259 grammar specification. It verifies whether text structures satisfy strict syntactic rules, locates parser errors with exact line and column positions, and reformats compressed or minified JSON text into indented, human-readable representations. Application developers, API engineers, and systems administrators use this tool to validate configurations, inspect REST responses, and eliminate invalid payloads prior to deployment.

Worked Syntax Examples: Broken Input vs Valid Output

Understanding standard parser exceptions helps pinpoint why automated web services reject payload submissions.

Example: Malformed Configuration Payload

{
  'site': "byoviral.com",
  "verified": true,
  "threshold": 0500,
  "tags": ["analytics", "privacy",],
}

When evaluated by the validator, three distinct RFC 8259 syntax violations are flagged immediately:

  • Single quotes on keys: Property names must be enclosed in double quotation marks ("site" instead of 'site').
  • Leading zero in numbers: The value 0500 violates numerical grammar; integers cannot carry arbitrary leading zeros.
  • Trailing commas: Trailing commas after "privacy" and after the closing array bracket cause hard syntax failures in standard JSON parsers.

Corrected and Formatted Output

{
  "site": "byoviral.com",
  "verified": true,
  "threshold": 500,
  "tags": [
    "analytics",
    "privacy"
  ]
}

Common JSON Parsing Errors in Production Systems

Integration pipelines frequently suffer downtime from subtle formatting oversights:

  • Encoding and transport corruption: JSON text transmitted across network protocols must strictly adhere to UTF-8 encoding. Non-ASCII characters encoded under legacy code pages (like Windows-1252 or Latin-1) cause unrecoverable byte sequence decoding errors in modern JSON parsing libraries.
  • Unescaped control characters: Literal tab characters, raw carriage returns, and unescaped backslashes inside string values invalidate the entire document. Special characters must be properly escaped (e.g., \n, \t, \\).
  • Confusing JavaScript objects with JSON: JavaScript allows unquoted object keys, functions, undefined, and trailing commas. None of these constructs are legal in JSON data interchange.
  • Byte Order Mark (BOM) corruption: Some text editors save UTF-8 files with a hidden Byte Order Mark (EF BB BF) at the start of the file. Many backend parsers fail with unexpected character exceptions on the first line.
  • Unsupported floating values: JSON does not support NaN, Infinity, or -Infinity. Attempting to encode these values produces parse errors.
